Compared to Halesia tetraptera (common silverbell), this species tends to be smaller and multi-stemmed. Bell-shaped flowers hang from the branches as the new leaves emerge in spring. It is an outstanding small tree for a garden or a woodland setting. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators. Two-winged fruits follow the flowers and persist into the winter. It is reported to be host for caterpillars of the tiger swallowtail, viceroy butterfly and promethea moth.
