This one has narrow, lance-shaped leaves up to about six inches long with two to three inch wide flowers. The stems and leaves have coarse hairs that are rough to the touch. The plant spreads by rhizomes so it may be best suited to an informal garden or a natural area. Sunflowers host a large number of butterfly and moth caterpillars. Bees and other insect pollinators visit the flowers. Birds eat the seeds. It is reported that deer may browse on this plant, particularly the seed heads.
