This is a tall, robust wildflower that spreads rapidly by rhizomes. Two to three inch wide, bright yellow daisies are produced in large numbers in late summer and fall. It is very easy to grow in the garden but is best suited for large gardens and moist natural areas. It will grow in shade but it flowers much better in sun. The flowers attract a wide assortment of insect pollinators. Birds eat the seeds. It is deer resistant.

This plant has been confused with Helianthus angustifolius in the nursery trade and the UNN sold H. simulans under that name prior to 2026.
