This wildflower is an odd member of the carrot family. Its blue-gray, sword-shaped leaves are produced in rosettes much like a yucca. It differs from yucca in having small spines along the leaf margins and in being deciduous. In summer, it produces a tall flower spike. The small, white flowers are borne in spherical heads. This plant makes a dramatic accent in the garden and looks great in a perennial border. It could make a striking specimen in a large container. The flowers attract a surprising assortment of pollinating insects. Deer leave these plants alone.
