This native wildflower grows as a rosette of broad leaves that are held near the ground. It may be a lawn weed, especially where turf is weak due to soil compaction. On the other hand, a colony can be a good groundcover in areas of poor, packed soil. It tolerates some foot traffic. It may be best naturalized in a difficult area where other plants fail to thrive. The tender young leaves are edible raw. Older leaves may be cooked. Larvae of the common buckeye butterfly feed on the leaves, too. The spikes of flowers attract small insect pollinators. It is reported that deer and rabbits may browse on it.
