This is an outstanding medium-sized shade tree that is perfect for small suburban properties and would make an excellent replacement for a callery pear. Unfortunately, it is rare in the nursery industry. It is closely related to the sugar maple and looks like a small version of it. The name "chalk maple" refers to the attractive smooth light gray bark on mature trees. The bright orange fall color is similar to that of the sugar maple. The caterpillars of the imperial moth and other moths feed on the foliage. Bees and other insect pollinators are attracted to the spring flowers. Birds and other wildlife feed on the seeds. Deer will browse on leaves and twigs that are in reach.
