This native, evergreen wildflower grows through the cool season as a clump of slender, succulent, grass-like leaves. In summer, slender stalks that bend at the top bear small, bell-shaped flowers that look toward the ground. It is an attractive wildflower that can be used in a formal garden or naturalized. The flowers attract bees and other insect pollinators. Reports state that the larvae of the gray hairstreak butterfly feed on this plant. When bruised, it smells like the onion that it is. It is resistant to deer browse.
