This is a compact selection of the clumping native grass. It was discovered as a wild population of compact plants in North Carolina. The flower stalks have reddish and purple tints. The seed heads are silvery. It is an attractive grass that is suitable for a flower border, a pocket prairie or for naturalizing. Birds eat the seeds. The caterpillars of the wood nymph and various skipper butterflies feed on this plant. Deer tend to leave grasses alone.
