This native azalea has an upright, open habit. It is deciduous. Showy flowers are produced in clusters at the branch tips. One way to distinguish this orange-red azalea is by the sticky hairs on the flower buds and tubes. The flowers are not fragrant. In the garden, this is a striking specimen for a shady spot or it can be naturalized in the woods. Bees, hummingbirds and butterflies visit the flowers. It may be browsed by deer.
