The flowers of this wildflower are not showy or colorful. This plant's garden value is as a host plant for the caterpillars of the red admiral, question mark, and comma butterflies. The foliage is nice enough to plant it in the corner of a formal garden. It is suitable for naturalizing. It is not aggressive but can spread by seeds. Unwanted seedlings can be pulled easily. Some references state that the flowers are visited by specialized bees and sometimes butterflies. Deer will nibble this plant but it seems that it not a favorite of theirs.
