The flowers of this wildflower are not showy or colorful. This plant's garden value is as a host plant for the caterpillars of the red admiral, question mark, and comma butterflies. The glossy foliage is attractive. It is suitable for naturalizing. It is not overly aggressive but will spread readily by seeds in a moist site. Unwanted seedlings can be pulled easily. Some references state that the flowers are visited by specialized bees and sometimes butterflies. Deer will nibble this plant but it seems that it not a favorite of theirs.
