This large tree may be best suited to a large property. Young plants are slow growing in a shady forest understory but they become forest giants in time. The smooth gray trunk is an outstanding feature of the mature tree. Young trees hold yellow-brown leaves well into the winter offering some seasonal interest when most other trees are bare. The fall seeds are eaten by people and by a wide assortment of wildlife. The caterpillars of several moths, including the luna and cecropia, feed on the foliage. Bees and other insect pollinators are attracted to the spring flowers. It is resistant to deer damage.
