This is a large deciduous shrub. It produces straight, vigorous shoots from its base but does not spread by suckers like some of its relatives. Small, white flowers are produced in large, flat-topped clusters. Small blue-black fruits are produced in fall. Two or more plants of different clones are needed for fruit production. In the garden, plants may be pruned regularly to control their height or trimmed up to create a multi-stemmed, tree-like form. A wide variety of insect pollinators are attracted to the flowers. Birds and other small wildlife eat the fruits. Deer will browse on any leaves and twigs that they can easily reach.
