This clump-forming ornamental grass is distinguished by its arching leaves and slender flower stalks. The seeds look like tiny versions of the seeds of upland river oats. It may spread by seed but unwanted plants can be pulled easily. It is attractive in a subdued way. It is suitable for a formal garden but may be at its best in an informal garden, in a border or naturalized in a woodland. It serves as a host for caterpillars of the northern pearly-eye butterfly and various skippers. Birds eat the seeds. Deer tend to leave grasses alone.
