Of the three Chrysogonum species, this is only species native to the South Carolina upstate. The leaves grow in low, flat rosettes. Flowers stand on stalks an inch or so above the leaves. It spreads by stolons that are a few inches long, becoming a tidy, compact groundcover. It is a good replacement for the non-native ajuga or bugleweed. The flowers are visited by early pollinators like bees. Deer tend to ignore it - possibly because of its low stature.
