This beautiful medium-sized tree is rare in South Carolina. It produces long hanging spikes of flowers in spring after the leaves expand. Individual flowers are similar of those of black locust. The leaves are divided and turn bright yellow in fall. It is useful as a flowering specimen tree or as a shade tree. Several references say to avoid pruning in winter or spring because of a strong tendency to bleed. The flowers are visited by bees. Birds eat the seeds. Young plants need protection from deer.
