This tall deciduous shrub or small tree is found naturally in South Carolina's mountains. It is rare in the nursery trade. It will develop multiple trunks but may be trained into a single trunk. Over time, it can sucker and develop into a small colony. It flowers well in shady locations. White flowers are produced in numerous descending spikes. They attract hummingbirds, butterflies, bees and other pollinators. This is an attractive shrub in a formal garden or in a naturalistic situation. The small seeds are eaten by birds and other small animals. It is considered to deer resistant but they may browse new shoots and flower buds.
