This is a tall, clumping wildflower with upright stalks topped by flat heads of purple flowers in fall. This clumping plant is suitable for the back of the flower border and for naturalizing in sunny sites. Remove the dead flower heads if you do not want volunteer seedlings. It is suitable for the back of a formal garden plant or for naturalizing. The flowers attract a wide assortment of insect pollinators including a specialized native bee. It is host for the caterpillars of the American painted lady butterfly. Birds eat the seeds. It is resistant to deer but they may browse on tender spring growth.
