This ornamental grass one of the few grasses that grows well in shade. It begins to grow in late winter and flowers in summer. The flower spikes are bristly and wheat-like. The seed spikes mature in late summer and fall. Plants may be used in the garden singly as a specimen or massed for erosion control in naturalized areas. Northern pearly-eye butterfly caterpillars feed on the foliage of this plant. Birds eat the seeds. Deer tend to leave grasses alone. This plant is reported to grow under black walnut trees.
