This tall, clump-forming wildflower has vanilla scented flowers that occur in large rounded clusters up to 18” across. The flowers give way to attractive seed heads that last well into winter. This plant is suitable for a formal garden with adequate moisture and for naturalizing in wet meadows or on the water's edge. It can grow in average soils if it is watered during droughts. The flowers attract a variety of insect pollinators. It is a host for several moth caterpillars. Birds eat the seeds. It is generally regarded as deer resistant.
