This beautiful small tree flowers in late winter before its leaves emerge. Clusters of small pink flowers are produced along the branches and, sometimes, on the trunk. The leaves are distinctively heart-shaped. In the garden, it can be used as a shade tree on a small property, as a splash of spring color under larger trees, or naturalized in a woodland understory. The flowers are important for early pollinators, especially native bees. It is a host plant for the Henry's elfin butterfly, io moth and several others. Birds eat the seeds. Young plants need protection from deer.
