This wildflower has a single basal leaf and, when mature, produces a stalk of two leaves and a flower. The plant spreads slowly by rhizomes to form a colony. It may take a few years for a young plant to produce its first flower. Red berries (not edible) follow the flowers. Because of its slow spread, it is suitable for a shady site in a formal garden or for naturalizing in the woods. Native bees and other small insects pollinate the flowers. Birds and other small animals eat the berries. It is resistant to deer damage.
This plant has a "Vulnerable" status in conservation due, in part, to over-collection.
