This wildflower grows naturally in and next to wetlands. It can grow in average garden soil if it gets extra water during extended dry spells. Also, it will grow with its roots and crown submerged in water. A leafy clump of green to reddish leaves produces tall, branched stalks of bright red flowers in mid-summer. A flowering plant is an eye-catcher. The showy flowers attract hummingbirds, butterflies and other insect pollinators. Some references say it is deer resistant but plants at the Upstate Native Nursery have experienced some deer damage.
