This is a selection of a wild fruit-bearing American holly found in Greenville County, SC. It has the typical form and habit of the species. If a pollen-bearing plant is nearby, it will produce bright red fruits in winter. A well-grown American holly is a striking specimen in the home landscape. Bees, wasps and moths are pollinators. Henry's elfin butterfly caterpillars use this plant as a host. The evergreen foliage provides winter protection for wildlife. The fruits are eaten by fruit-eating birds and other wildlife.
