In nature, this creeping fern occurs on rotting logs and in rich soils of swamps and wet woodlands. It will tolerate somewhat drier garden conditions for a fern but cannot be considered drought tolerant. It is a semi-evergreen with leaves greater than 6" wide. It is suitable for any situation from a shady formal garden to a naturalistic setting. Deer tend to leave ferns alone.
