This is a compact, clumping ornamental grass. The flowers are produced in open airy panicles. The panicles turn pink as the seeds ripen. It can be planted in the front of a formal garden border or naturalized on a dry slope for erosion control. This plant hosts moth caterpillars which in turn are eaten by birds. Birds and other small animals eat the seeds. Deer tend to leave grasses alone.
