This is a native deciduous tree with distinctive star-shaped leaves and small, spikey balls of seeds in fall. It is known for its colorful and varied fall foliage, often a mix of yellow, orange, red and purple. Because of its large size, it is best suited for a large yard. Primarily, sweetgum flowers are pollinated by wind. Small birds eat the seeds. The caterpillars of luna, regal, imperial, io, prometheus and other large moths use persimmons as host plants. Young plants should be protected from deer.
