This large deciduous tree is the largest of South Carolina's native buckeye species. It has spikes of yellow flowers in the spring which are followed by the familiar buckeye fruits and seeds. The palmately divided leaves of the buckeyes are unique among our native trees. Its pollinators include bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. The larvae of several moths feed on buckeyes. As with other buckeyes, the seeds are toxic for people but squirrels eat them. Plants have some deer resistant but it is best to protect seedlings.
