This small native rose has smooth, dark green foliage with stems that are protected by slender prickles. Two to three inch wide flowers are followed by small, red rose hips. It spreads by suckers and can form colonies. It develops deep tap roots in time and will become fairly drought resistant. This rose may be best suited to a natural setting. In the garden, growing it in a large container can control the spread of the root suckers. Birds, small mammals and people eat the fruits. Bees are the primary pollinators but other insects visit the flowers. Polyphemus moth caterpillars feed on the leaves. Deer will browse on this plant.
