Eastern gamagrass is a sturdy, clump-forming grass with comparatively wide leaves. Leaf edges are serrated and can cut if grabbed at the wrong angle. Flower spikes arch above the foliage. It is dormant in winter. In the garden, a single plant may be used as an accent or or it may be used as a tall summer border. The dense clumps provide shelter to birds and other wildlife. Various skipper butterfly caterpillars use it as a host plant. Birds and deer eat the comparatively large seeds. This species will grow under black walnut.
