This is a comparatively small native vine with spectacular clusters of red, trumpet-shaped flowers. It is semi-evergreen, dropping its leaves in the coldest part of winter. It climbs by twining and is small enough to grow on a small trellis or suburban fence. It is suitable for a formal or informal garden. The flowers are visited by hummingbirds, large butterflies and moths. In fall, its red berries help feed the birds. Spring azure butterfly and snowberry clearwing moths larvae feed on this plant. Deer will browse on coral honeysuckle.
