This is a beautiful slow-growing tree that is not widely cultivated. The canopy tends to be upright and it gets tall in time. Its red fall color is outstanding. Its small flowers are attractive to an assortment of bees and it is one of the nectar sources for tupelo honey. A wide assortment of fruit-eating birds will fuss and fight over the small, blue fruits. The fruits are edible but the fruits of some trees taste better than others. Some are pleasantly acidic to the taste while others are bitter. Deer will browse leaves and twigs within reach.
