This attractive wildflower grows in clumps of upright stems. Bright red and yellow flowers are produced at the tops of the stems. It is an excellent garden plant, perfect for a formal garden or a less formal situation. It is uncommon in much of its natural range and is classified as a threatened species in North Carolina. Hummingbirds are the primary pollinators.  A fruit capsule appears in June or July. With a little luck, you will have a few volunteer seedlings appear. Deer will browse on this plant.
