In the right spot, this native fern spreads fairly vigorously by rhizomes. The sterile fronds are divided just once, giving the plant a distinctive and lush appearance. The spore-bearing fertile fronds are upright with tightly compressed leaflets. They turn brown at maturity. This plant requires a moist site and will serve well as a container plant or for naturalizing. Deer tend to leave ferns alone.
