This is a clump-forming wildflower with a low rosette of leaves and tall flower stalks. These plants are seedlings from the typical white-flowered wild type. This is an adaptable plant that is excellent for use in a formal garden or a natural area. It is surprising that this plant is not much more common in the nursery trade. The flowers attract bees, hummingbirds and butterflies. It is a larval host for the buckeye butterfly and several moth caterpillars. It is reasonably deer resistant.
