This low-growing wildflower is native to South Carolina but is found mostly in the Coastal Plain. It spreads rapidly along the ground. It is a dense mat in full sun and a little more open in part shade. It is not as durable as turf grass but it can withstand some foot traffic. It dies back to the ground in the winter in the Upstate. In the garden, it can serve as a sturdy groundcover, providing some erosion and weed control. It grows well in a container, spilling over the edge. The small, verbena-like flowers attract small butterflies, bees and other insect pollinators. It is a host plant for the caterpillars of buckeye butterflies. Deer seem to ignore it.
