Compared to other native mountain mints, this plant has small, oval leaves and a dense flower head that lacks the surrounding white leaves of some species. It spreads slowly by rhizomes developing into a dense clump. Its flowers resemble those of Pycnanthemum tenuifolium but it has upright stems and begins flowering later than P. tenuifolium. It is easy to grow in the garden and may benefit from afternoon shade in a hot, dry spot. It may be best suited to a natural setting. The mountain mints are outstanding at attracting insect pollinators. It is resistant to deer and rabbit damage
