This herbaceous vine has tendrils along its stems that allow them to climb. It dies to the ground in winter. In nature, it may be found as a groundcover in the woodland understory. The leaves are wider than they are long and have three lobes. It is suitable for a formal or a natural setting. It looks good in a container with a short trellis where the small flowers can be viewed easily. The one-inch flowers attract insect pollinators and a specialist, the passionflower bee. It is a host for gulf fritillary butterfly caterpillars. The small black fruits are eaten by birds. It is fairly resistant to deer damage.
