This is a deciduous understory tree with a smooth gray bark. It has huge leaves that may be up to twenty-four inches long. The white flowers may be as wide as six inches. This is beautiful tree for any garden, from formal to wild. The leaves may tear in winds so a protected site is beneficial. Beetles are the flowers' main pollinators. Birds will fight over the red-coated seeds. The plant may host tiger swallowtail and sweetbay silk moth larvae. Deer may browse young plants.
