This is not a plant for the average home garden. In nature, this rare, evergreen wildflower is found on moist slopes near water in humid mountain gorges. It grows in a clay substrate with a mulch of leaf litter to help retain moisture. In good conditions, it will spread by stolons and develop into a groundcover. Short stalks hold the nodding flowers above the foliage. Bees and other insects visit the flowers. These seedlings came from the estate of SCNPS member Joe Townsend who cultivated this Oconee bells for years.
