Solidago caesia - blue stemmed goldenrod
Height: to 3’
Spread: to 3’
Light Needs: full sun to part shade
Water: average to dry
Flower color: yellow
Bloom time: July to September
This is a clumping goldenrod with arching stems and long leaves - up to five inches long. Flowers are produced in short spikes along the stems. In nature, this goldenrod is usually found in woods. While it grows and flowers well in part shade, it is reported to flower better in full sun. It may be best for informal gardens to natural areas because of its arching habit. All goldenrods are excellent at attracting a wide variety of pollinators. They have moderate deer resistance. New spring growth seems susceptible to deer browse.
It is worth noting that goldenrods do not cause hay fever. Lightweight, air-borne pollen grains of plants like ragweed cause hay fever. Goldenrod pollen is comparatively heavy and sticky. It is moved from flower to flower by insects.
