This is a beautiful flowering large shrub or small tree. Large numbers of small, fragrant, white flowers are produced in spring as the leaves emerge. It is suitable for gardens and for naturalizing in a woodland. It is easily trimmed into a small tree that is suitable as an accent in a formal garden. The flowers attract butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinators. It is a host for caterpillars of the promethea moth. Birds eat the fruits. Deer will browse on leaves and branches in their reach.
