Unlike some of its spreading relatives, this sunflower develops a low cluster of leaves and a tight cluster of upright flower stalks. In fall, the tall stalks are topped with bright yellow daisies that have dark, purplish centers. Because of its restrained spread, this is one of the better sunflowers for a small garden. Silvery checkerspot larvae feed on the leaves. A wide variety of insect pollinators visit the flowers. Birds eat the seeds. It is reported to be fairly resistant to deer browse.
