This large, deciduous shade tree is better suited for a large property than a small suburban yard. The leaves are large and heart-shaped. Honey bees, native bee species and other insect pollinators visit the fragrant flowers. The caterpillars of the mourning cloak, question mark butterflies and an assortment of moths feed on the foliage. Nationwide, over 150 species of Lepidoptera have been recorded feeding on this tree. Birds and small mammals feed on the seeds. Deer browse on leaves and twigs that are in reach.
