This deciduous fern is very adaptable and is more tolerant of dry conditions than most ferns. The arching leaves have a graceful appearance. It is common along the coastal plain but is rare in Upstate South Carolina. In the garden, the clump spreads slowly and is tidy enough for a formal garden. It is very adaptable to soil types and can tolerate a high pH. So, it will grow well next to a concrete foundation or a sidewalk. It is more likely to spread by spores in a moist site. Deer tend to leave ferns alone.
