This deciduous shrub has small, fragrant white flowers that are borne on dense, spherical heads. Long projecting styles give the flower heads a pincushion-like appearance. Plants are are usually found along a sunny stream or pond edge. In the garden, plants will require a moist site or regular irrigation. These flower heads are very attractive to butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators. A wide assortment of birds, including ducks and geese, eat the seeds. Several large moth caterpillars feed on this plant. It is deer resistant.
