This distinctive little fern is evergreen. It develops into tight clumps. It has upright to arching, slender, dark green leaves. The leaf stalk and midrib is dark purplish brown (ebony) in color. It tolerates drier conditions better than most ferns. It is suitable for a small formal garden or for naturalizing. Deer tend to leave ferns alone.
