This wildflower lives longer in well-drained, alkaline soils than in our acidic clay soils. Regardless, they volunteer readily from seeds, especially in gravelly or rocky sites. Alternatively, it can grow well in commercial potting soil or in a concrete pot. In a moist site, the foliage remains attractive throughout summer. Flowers are attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, moths and bees. It tends to be resistant to deer but at least one SCNPS member has reported deer damage. It has been observed that hungry deer will eat anything.
