In nature, this deciduous shrub is often found in the forest understory. It produces more fruits in a sunnier site. Small pink flowers are followed by small, flavorful blueberries. Usually, it begins to flower a little later than commercial blueberry cultivars. It spreads slowly by root suckering. As with other blueberries, two plants of different clones are needed for cross-pollination and the best fruit production. In the garden, it may be planted singly as an accent, in groups for a low screen or planted under trees in a natural setting. Bees pollinate the flowers and birds eat the fruits. The berries are edible and tasty if you can beat the birds to them.
