This wildflower is very different from the common ironweed species in our region. It grows well in sunny, dry sites. Its leaves grow in a rosette that is flattened on the ground. The center spike grows to three tall and is topped by purple flowers in summer. It seems well-suited to any garden from formal to a naturalistic. Like its tall relatives, the flower attract butterflies, bees and other insect pollinators. It is considered to be deer resistant.
