This plant is a multi-stemmed shrub. It does not spread by suckers like some of its relatives. White flowers are borne in large clusters and are followed by fruits that turn from pink to blue as they mature. Fall leaf color is maroon to purple. It can make an exceptional accent in a formal garden and is perfectly suitable for a naturalistic landscape. The mature fruits are eaten by birds and other small animals (and people). Having two or more plants improves fruit production. It is regarded as fairly deer resistant but consider protecting young plants.
